San Francisco is one of the loveliest and most history-rich cities on the West Coast of the USA. Scores of visitors flock to San Francisco each year for the cultural importance and the picturesque beauty of the city, and many of these visitors become repeat visitors over the years. If you have been to San Francisco before, you may already be planning your next trip. And if you haven’t ever visited San Francisco, it’s probably about time for you to start planning a trip.

One of the most famous (and most iconic) landmarks of the city is the Golden Gate Bridge. This bridge stretches from the northern point of the San Francisco peninsula to beautiful Marin County. When the Golden Gate Bridge was first constructed, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge is open to cars and pedestrians, and it is both a beautiful drive and a beautiful walk. In fact, there are few things more pleasant on a beautiful, sunny afternoon than a stroll across the Golden Gate Bridge.

When you hear about the city of San Francisco, you will also frequently hear people speak of Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf – which has been home to San Francisco’s fishing fleets for a long time – is situated on the northeast corner of the peninsula. Scores of fishermen depart from Fisherman’s Wharf every morning, using it as their home base even today, when the area itself has been made much more tourist-friendly. During your visit to the wharf, you might even be fortunate enough to see the seals sunning themselves in huge groups around the wharf. This is a truly tremendous sight!

Once the home of one of the world’s most famous prisons, Alcatraz Island has now been turned into an incredible sightseeing destination. During its time as a prison, Alcatraz was used to hold only the most notorious criminals. In fact, the prison even housed Al Capone for a time! Although the island is situated in San Francisco Bay, in plain sight of Oakland and San Francisco, the distance to land is too far to swim, the water is too cold, and the rocks are too treacherous. Although one story of a single escape from Alcatraz does exist, the authorities maintain that no one ever escaped from Alcatraz – at least, no one ever escaped and reached shore alive.

These three sites will give you a great starting point when you visit San Francisco, and then it will be up to you to search out and enjoy everything else this incredible city has to offer!
