A new study published in the journal Nature found that genetics plays a bigger role in the development of obesity than was previously thought. Researchers from the University of Michigan unveiled the results of a genome-wide association study looking at body mass index (BMI), a common measure of obesity, in close to 400,000 individuals (Nature, 518:197-206;February 11, 2015).
This new research finds that as much as 21% of BMI variation can be accounted for by genetics. There are about 100 locations across the genome that plays roles in various obesity traits, double than what was previously thought.
“This research may help determine who is at risk of developing diseases associated with obesity and may lend insight into future treatment,” says Elaine Trujillo, nutritionist and author of The Calories In Calories Out Cookbook. “We have known that one size does not fit all when it comes to weight gain, development of risk factors and even obesity treatment. Now we have more research to support that notion,” Trujillo adds.
According to Caroline Apovian, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and the Director of the Nutrition and Weight Management Center, Boston Medical Center, Boston University, “For those of us treating obesity, this is exciting news because particular genes and pathways affecting BMI have been implicated that respond to changes in eating behavior. Once we can figure out which of these genes are implicated in each patient, we can tailor the treatment of their obesity based on their particular genetic profile. For example, one of the pathways implicated in this paper is one that is the proposed mechanism of action of the combination of drugs recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for treatment of obesity – topiramate/phentermine. Based on genetic profiles, we may be able to predict which patients will be successful at weight loss with this particular drug combination (topiramate/phentermine) as opposed to another treatment if they have this pathway variation. Also, we may be able to predict who will do well with bariatric surgery in the future.”
In a companion paper on waist-to-hip circumference ratios, 49 sites in the genome were identified (Nature 518:187-186; February 12, 2015). The waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference alone are used to determine fat distribution and abdominal fatness and is a marker for developing diseases associated with obesity. Men who have waist circumferences greater than 40 inches and women who have waist circumferences greater than 35 inches are at higher risk of diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and cardio-vascular disease.
Much more research is needed to determine how the genetic variations in individuals lead to weight gain in some and not in others. Some of the genes involved in obesity may be related to other diseases, this research is a step in uncovering the biological basis to a whole host of metabolic diseases. Although genetic background may be a useful tool in the future for developing personalized diets for weight loss and health, those ...Read More
If you have ever been on a plane, you may have heard instructions that told you to, in case the plane depressurizes in an emergency, put on your own oxygen mask before attempting to help someone else with theirs. The reason for this is that unless you take care of yourself, you are not able to assist others.
I am a fitness instructor and I talk to a lot of people about their fitness. Sometimes it is hard, because when I ask people the questions, “How did you get out of shape?” the answers often have to do with the fact that they have not taken care of themselves.
However, it should be obvious that you will not have the ability to assist others unless you have spent some time and energy helping yourself. I frequently ask people a couple of questions. These questions are, “In what ways are you investing in yourself?” and “In what ways are you investing in other people?” The point is, it is very difficult to invest is people if you have not also made it a priority to invest in yourself.
Some people think that you cannot work on your own health and dreams if you have children. This is because they think taking care of children supersedes taking care of themselves. However, you cannot give away what you do not possess yourself. Why do you think you can teach your children what you are not practicing?
There is a startling epidemic of childhood obesity in our country. One of the reasons for this is the fact that many parents are not taking care of themselves. They are practicing bad habits and are inadvertently teaching their children to also not take care of themselves. Do parents really want their children living unhealthy lives?
It is time to take a good look at ourselves and accept the fact that we have to take responsibility for what we are teaching our children about taking care of themselves. Start today to eat a good breakfast, get at least twenty five minutes of exercise and change your life. Do it for you and do it for those around you.

Many people enjoy eating candy bars, cookies and other foods that have sugar on a daily basis. This is a bad habit that can lead to serious health problems, if it is not controlled. The body does not need this sugar as it is able to make its own by breaking down proteins and carbohydrates. Some foods such as corn syrup contain a high amount of fructose. According to scientists these sugars can cause illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
A high intake of fructose is connected with metabolic syndrome in both humans and animals. This a group of factors that lead to high chances of developing cardiovascular problems as well as diabetes and other diseases. Foods that have more sucrose and fructose compared to starch contribute to accumulation of fat molecules around major organs of the body.
It is advisable to look for naturally occurring sugars. Good examples are those found in fruits and honey. They are okay as long as they are consumed moderately. What is not fine is taking too much artificial sugar.
Many processed foods contain artificial flavors that are not good for the body. When you take a fruit you get vitamins, fiber, minerals and a lot of photo-nutrients all which are good for your growth. Sugar in the form of fructose is also present. Fruits such as oranges and apples contain sugar that is not harmful to the body. Even if you eat two or three fruits, you only get about an ounce of sugar and some fibers.
If you drink a can of soda you get a lot of sugar and no nutrients from it. All it has is a bunch of artificial flavors and sweeteners that do more harm than good. The fruits are the better choice and you are strongly advised to consume them instead of drinking soda.
Nowadays, sugar does not cost much unlike back in the days when only the rich in society could afford it. Many food processing firms prefer to use sugars in their ingredients so that they can cut down on the amount of starch present because it is more costly. Almost all processed foods contain artificial sweeteners which are not good for the body.
Sugar fills your bloodstream with glucose which transforms to fat. Too much fat will lead to blockage in the arteries and this is the beginning of cardiovascular problems and obesity. Diabetes also develops when there is too much sugar. It is therefore advisable to avoid consuming too much processed foods if you want to live a healthy life.
It is advisable to join a weight loss program if you feel that you have too much fat in your body. Physical exercise as well as taking a good diet will help you improve your health and general well being. Try to fill your diet with foods that are natural. The less artificial sugar you consume the healthier you will be. Avoiding processed foods is a good way to prevent obesity and other health complications.
Are you trying to lose weight but have run out of ideas to try? Using a meal replacer may be the answer that you are looking for. Meal replacers come in many different forms, such as shakes, boxed products and bars. Meal replacements are food products which have a robust amount of nutrition and are designed to stand in for an entire meal, as the name suggests.
One concern that some people have is wondering if by using a meal replacer, if they will be more hungry-after all, you will be consuming fewer calories. The worry is that those calories will simply work their way back into your diet at some point during the day. But usually this is a concern: you may, in fact, find that you actually get used to having a smaller calorie consumption at that particular meal.
Another way that using meal replacements may help you is by giving you a picture of a smaller meal to carry around in your mind. It may be that simply thinking about a smaller meal may help you to eat more slowly and pay more attention to your feelings of fullness.
When choosing a good meal replacer, there are some things to keep in mind. First, where to buy them: generally, you will find these at the grocery store where you usually shop. Alternatively, you may be able to get them from your doctor or from a weight loss expert. Just be sure that your meal replacer has around two hundred to three hundred calories in it. Also, stay away from meal replacers that have a lot of sugar. Finally, make sure that they contain at least one third of the daily requirements of minerals and vitamins.
It is a good idea to talk with your doctor before attempting to lose weight by reducing your calories with a meal replacer. This is especially important to do if you already have some medical conditions that you are being treated for.
How long should clients use meal replacements? If using one meal replacement per day, clients can continue indefinitely, as long as they monitor their intake at other meals to maintain a well-balanced diet. Those who plan to use two or more meal replacements per day should seek the advice of a clinical weight loss specialist.
One the primary risks to persons who are overweight and have a high body mass index is that the method in which your organs operate is changed by the excess fat. Individuals often focus on how excess body fat impacts their appearance , surplus fat’s affect on overall body functions should not be disregarded.
Let’s have a closer look at a few of the key problems linked with extra fat and your organs.
Additional body fats influence the organs and one of the initial systems to be impacted is the reproductive system. Males who are obese might not have correctly working reproductive organs and could actually become sterile. If a man is extremely overweight, this definitely should be examined as this might be the chief reason why the couple is infertile.
Women with extra body fat can also have problems. Generally primary concerns are a consequence from having too little body fat in women. which causes menstruation to stop, but too much body fat in some extreme cases can cause this as well.
Your Digestive System: How it Functions When You are Obese
The next group of organs that will be impacted by surplus weight is your digestive system. The liver and pancreas do not operate as effectively when excess fat accumulates,, if high glucose foods keep on being assimilated by the body, thisconsumption this is the chief contributing reason for weight gain. The pancreas may begin to be very overworked as it puts insulin creation into overdrive and this can result in long-term health issues such as the occurrence of diabetes.
Maintaining an improved diet with all the crucial nutrition the body requires in addition to adequate dietary fiber will help to keep the digestive system organs in proper working order.
The cardiovascular system is the last body system to be effected adversely in people with additional body fat.
Overweight persons may suffer increased plaque build-up in the blood vessels as high cholesterol levels begin taking place in the body this leads to the heart to work harder and harder to transfer blood though tissues expanded from additional body weight.
This can ultimately cause a significant amount of strain on the circulatory system and can possibly lead to heart disease or even heart attacks..
Good cardiovascular functioning is easier to keep in persons who have an optimum body weight and frequently this is one of the biggest benefits you see upon losing excess weight – your heart condition improves.
We have included only a few of the different organ systems that will be impacted as you begin to become overweight.
Having extra body fat is much more significant than how it changes your appearance. If you’re not careful there could be some serious health problems that you set yourself up to be subjected to in the long run if you don’t take actions to keep your weight problem under control.
A suggested diet that will permit you to achieve dietary success involves a diet that is elevated in fruits and ...Read More
Have you ever felt frustrated because you are trying to lose weight but when you step on the scale it has not budged? This can be very disheartening. Many people at that point make a crucial decision: they have to choose between continuing on or just giving up.
Lots of people go ahead and give up. After all, if they are working that hard with no results, what is the point? But this is sad, because often they are just days away from a breakthrough and they will move off that plateau and continue seeing progress. But also, the number on the scale does not tell the whole story-you will eventually lose weight, but maybe not at the pace that you want.
Sometimes we need a little extra motivation to stay on track. Joining a weight loss competition is a great way to do this. But if you do not like competitions, you can use an online fitness tracker. Be sure to pay attention to your food intake as well. If you are trying to speed your weight loss by severely restricting calories, you may be working against yourself and keeping your body from dropping pounds.
But let’s say that you are losing inches, even though you are not noticing any movement on the scale. That is fine! Sometimes your body loses inches and those inches are not necessarily reflecting by the scale’s numbers. Just keep doing what you are doing because it is obviously working for your body.
You made the choice to get fit, or eat better, maybe do both, so you can enjoy your body more, live with heightened levels of energy, find better rest at night, feel attractive again. Just do not give up. Hang in there and see it through.
Remember that it is not about just making one decision and letting that be the end of it. You must make decisions to be healthy all day every day. That is the key to sticking with your fitness plan and seeing success at the end!

For more than two thousand years, green tea has been regarded in China and other Asian locations. There has been research for about twenty years into a positive impact this tea may have for numerous cancers plus heart related disorders. Minor study into this plant shows hope for weight loss and control, cholesterol care, and general anti-aging qualities. But this is not a cure all or instantaneous approach because the key here is regular use over time. Living a wholesome way of life will definitely contribute to your results.
Green tea does comprise powerful antioxidants termed polyphenols and catechins. Free radicals are able to cripple cells and DNA within the cells, and that’s what antioxidants work to stop. It is more than possible that the health advantages attributed to green tea are a direct consequence of the cumulative influences of these substances. That is the reason why it is good to remember that green tea can help a person who drinks it on a regular basis over the long term.
Green tea is made in another way from others such as black tea, and it is this fundamental preparation after harvesting that makes the difference. Black and white teas are treated using a distinct procedure from green tea. The foliage of green tea aren’t fermented such as those of Oolong and black teas. But the leaves of green tea are steamed once they are dried. That prep system produces tea with more substantial antioxidants as well as other valuable properties.
You could possibly have read about fat loss benefits conferred by sipping green tea. Caffeine can be accurately called a fat burner, and green tea provides mild amounts of it but you will find other properties involved, too. There are other elements that produce a thermogenic effect and contribute to a higher amount of fat cell metabolism. Yes, it is true that drinking green tea will raise your metabolism, but it appears to achieve this for a lot more than one reason. Even so, the end result which most people in the West desire is to find added means to control weight.
Further benefits found in green tea include properties that help to prevent tooth decay. Other common benefits are related to the body’s defense mechanism. The tea has an overall strengthening effect on the body’s defense mechanisms, and that contributes to a general cutting down of infections. Green tea has also been demonstrated to have positive effects on bringing down blood pressure. Moreover, asthma sufferers can benefit from drinking green tea because of a substance that promotes the relaxation of the muscles close to the bronchial tubes. When the muscles are less constricted, subsequently breathing gets to be a lot easier and not as tough.
If you are like many people, you have made New Year’s resolutions in the past and then let them slip. Sure, you did okay for a few days, maybe even a week or two. Let me give you four tips on how to keep goals past January.
Share them. Do not keep your resolutions a secret. The more people who know, the more people you have keeping you accountable. This is a powerful system! For example, perhaps you want to run at least four half marathons this year.
If so, then register for those races and then make your plans public. Tell your friends and put it on Facebook. Ask people to keep you accountable so that you will stay on track. If others are watching you and asking for progress updates, you will have a better chance at success.
Another way to keep your resolutions is to make a list and keep up with it. Write down several things that you would like to do in the New Year. Just make sure that they are reasonable. You are not going to lose twenty pounds in one month or get out of debt in just a few weeks. Once you have a list, check in on it frequently.
What if you mess up? No worries! Everybody slips now and then. Do not let a setback hold you back from finally reaching your goals. Just get up and keep moving onward. Understand that just because you slipped up does not mean that you are a failure.
And make sure that you reward yourself for reaching your goals. We all love rewards. After you have reached a goal, find a way to congratulate yourself with something that you love. Maybe schedule a massage for yourself, or perhaps buy yourself a new item of clothing.
